Ideating the 1970's vision of India House

India has a very rich cultural and heritage background. Art & Culture is India’s strongest contribution to its rich heritage and history and is intrinsically woven into its identity. It is utmost important to protect and preserve our culture. With this vision, Jawaharlal Nehru had envisioned an initiative to build an institution/complex to celebrate the cultural and creative output of India. A new draft stating the need for cultural revival and sustaining India’s intangible and tangible heritage was drawn in 1970. This is how the vision of ‘India House’ was born, envisioned to be built in each of the 21 states.

Architect Charles Correa was endowed with the responsibility to design the first institute under Vision 1970, which is now famous as Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal. However, this was the only India house built under this initiative. And the original plan of one institute in each state did not reach its realization. The question arises as to why can’t we envision the 1970’s vision in 2022?

The thesis would focus on reanalyzing the 1970 vision and thereafter proposing vision 2022 which would be a step towards betterment and sustainable for a minimum of 50 to 75 years. Vision 2022 would focus on different aspects such as balance, cultural revival, encapsulating features, interactive proximity between verbal and non-verbal activities and user centered proposal.
